"What are the golf cart rules where I live?" It's one of the questions we hear most from customers all over Naples. The answer comes from two places: Florida law, and your own community's HOA rules. Here's how both work, and how to find the rules for your neighborhood.
Every community's rules sit on top of state law.
Florida's golf cart law covers public roads and streets. Many gated communities have private streets, where the association's rules set much of what's allowed. Ask your HOA which streets in your community are public and which are private.
Every new ICON, EPIC and ActivEV golf cart we sell is a street-legal LSV with a 3-year warranty, so you're covered whether your drive is inside the gates or out on the road. Learn more →
Every community is different, but these are the topics HOA rules most often address. Look for each one in your documents.
Some communities allow any golf cart. Others only allow street-legal LSVs with a plate, or limit the size, seating or type.
Many HOAs set a minimum driver age or require a driver license, sometimes stricter than state law.
Look for community speed limits and rules about which streets, golf cart paths or common areas golf carts can use, and whether they're allowed on sidewalks or the golf course.
Rules may say golf carts must be parked in the garage or driveway, not on the street or lawn, and may cover where and how you can charge.
Some communities set rules on colors, lift kits, music, lighting and accessories, or require approval before changes.
Your HOA may ask for proof of insurance, a community decal or sticker, or registration with the association or gate.
Check whether guests, renters or visiting family can drive your golf cart, and what the rules are for them.
Bring your community's golf cart rules to our showroom, or just tell us where you live. We'll walk you through the ICON, EPIC and ActivEV golf carts that fit, in 2, 4 and 6 passenger seating, and handle the title and plates.

Communities often set their own rules on things like driver age, speed, parking and which golf carts are allowed. Your community documents spell them out, so check them before you buy.
It depends on where you'll drive. If you'll only drive on private community streets, your HOA's rules decide. If you'll drive on public roads, a regular golf cart needs a road designated and signed for golf carts, while a street-legal LSV can use streets posted 35 mph or less. Every new golf cart we sell is a street-legal LSV.
On public roads, Florida requires drivers under 18 to have a learner's license or driver license, and drivers 18 and older to have a government-issued photo ID. Driving an LSV takes a valid driver license. Your HOA may set its own age rules inside the community.
Look in your declaration of covenants and rules and regulations, check the association's website or app, or ask your management company or board. Florida HOAs with 100 or more parcels must post their current rules online for owners.
A street-legal LSV must be insured in Florida, with at least $10,000 personal injury protection and $10,000 property damage liability. Your HOA may also ask for proof of insurance for any golf cart.
That's up to your community's rules and the law. Check your HOA documents, and on public roads every driver has to meet Florida's license and ID rules.
